About the rack

Made in the USA?

The Sherpa has been made in the USA since the company was founded back in 1996. The frame of the new Divide rack is made in Asia.
Design, product testing in real life conditions are made in California and Oregon.

Do I need a fit kit for the Divide?

No and yes. The Divide comes ready to be mounted to the eyelets of the frame. So if your frame has eyelets you do not need a fit kit. However, if your bike does not have eyelets or if you just want the benefits of an axle mount, then you need a fit kit.

Ok, I need a fit kit. But which and what is included?

The Fit Kit includes pucks, zip ties, clear protective tape and a new QR or axle. The axle susbstitutes the original axle of your bike so it is important that they have the same thread pitch. If you do not know the thread pitch of your axle our Bike Finder can help you.

Is the Bike Finder up to date?

We try our best to keep the Bike Finder updated and in 99.9% of the cases we are spot on. But bike manufacturers can change the configuration of a bike from one year to another or even from one model to another. So it is always a good idea to double check the two axles before you mount the rack.

What is the benefit of an axle mounted rack?

Well, first of all, every bike has a wheel and a center of a wheel, so this allows us to mount Old Man Mountain racks on pretty much any bike with a thru axle. Additionally, there are a few other benefits:

  • All the weight is carried on the axle, which is the most secure, durable and lowest mounting point on the bike.
  • On eyelet-mounted racks, the bolts are in shear, which is fairly weak when stressed over time. Our axles provide a physical interface for the rack that is far stronger for carrying load.
  • Axle mounted racks can be used on suspension bikes and require no adjustment to suspension settings.

Why would I use a cargo rack instead of soft bikepacking bags?

We don't think it is an either/or situation. Racks can compliment bikepacking bags, and vice versa. But we do think there are advantages to racks:

  • Cargo racks are ideal for small people with small bikes, who don't have the frame capacity for soft bags.
  • Cargo racks also allow for more carrying capacity, for those of us who want to carry more food and clothing, or a trombone. Just sayin'.
  • Racks allow for the weight to be carried lower on the bike, which generally allows for better handling.
  • Racks require no adjustment to suspension settings.
  • Racks require no adjustment to your cockpit and do not compromise your bike fit.
  • Carrying a backpack that has more than a hydration pack is horribly uncomfortable for long days in the saddle and just dumb.

How many kgs can I carry on the racks?

DIVIDE
When mounting to the eyelets the limit is 25kgs. For axle mounting, the weight limit of an Old Man Mountain Divide is 31.75 kgs evenly distributed. However, the quality of ride will diminish with the more weight you put on your rack. If you will be carrying more than 32kgs we suggest spreading your total weight load to be 60% on the front wheel and 40% on the rear wheel.

ELKHORN
The Elkhorn is designed for bikepacking or trips where you don't need the 32 kgs of the Divide rack.
The Elkhorn is good for 11.34 kgs.

PIZZA RACK
The Pizza Rack can comfortably carry up to 15.87 kgs.

AXLE PACK
Axle Pack is rated to 10kg per pair. That's 2x5kgs.

IMPALA LOWRIDER
Impala has 25kg load capacity. (18kg on pannier rails, 7kg on the deck)
FLiP CAGES
Hemlock bags and FLiP Cages are rated for 4.5 kg per side

Can I use Old Man Mountain with an internal gear hub or a nutted axle?

In the early days we did not offer this option.

But now you can mount our racks even on an internal gear hub or nutted axle.

These are the fit kits:
SET125 - Use 12mm x 1.25mm for Rad Power Bikes and Mahle/EBIKEMOTION Equipped E-Bikes
SET126 - Use 10mm x 1.0mm for Rohloff, Enviolo, Shimano Nexave, SRAM I-Motion, and SRAM Torpedo
SET127 - Use 3/8-26 for Shimano Nexus, Shimano Alfine, Shimano Coasting

What's up with the puck and zip ties?

As every seat stay is different, we used to have 13 different sizes of clamps. The pucks and zipties simplifies, one size fits all.

We supply special high-strength UV-resistant zip ties because they are safe for use with various frame materials and they are easy to install.

Our pucks are made of fiber reinforced nylon and have been thoroughly abused and tested to meet the demands of the roughest trails and the heaviest loads. We always turn to trail builders to test our racks durability because if anyone can break a bike part and load far more than is advised on a bike it's trail builders.

We provide protective clear tape to protect the finish of your frame or fork. It may need to be replaced after extended use.

Additionally, the upper attachment uses the pucks only to prevent the rack from rotating around the axle. The vast majority of the weight is carried on the axle.

And why is a seatpost clamp offered as an option?

Gravel and road bikes use thinner tubing and are often made of carbon. Some users feel there is a risk attaching the racks to the seat stays with pucks and zip ties. So we offer a seatpost clamp as an optional accessory if you prefer to attach the rack to the seat post. The seatpost clamps attach to common 27.2mm seatposts. If you have another size seatpost you would need to source the seatpost clamp locally. It is perfectly fine for the upper attachment of the rack to go to the seat stays. The risk is minimal as all the weight comes down on the axle when you hit bumps on the road. So, seat post clamp is optional.

Can I use the Axle Pack on any fork?

Yes, as long has the bike has a thru-axle.

The Axle Pack is NOT compatible with a standard QR skewer.

About panniers and accessories

Can I use any pannier on the racks?

Any pannier will work with Old Man Mountain Divide racks! While our rack frames use robust, oversized tubing, we use the industry standard pannier rail size for hanging the bags. So any pannier will work on the Divide.
Just remember that we do not recommend you hang side panniers to the Elkhorn rack as that is not safe. You can attach small bags to the three eyelets of the Elkhorn legs though.

Can I use a trailer or kid trailer with the racks?

Yes.
We offer the Kid Trailer Dropout as an accessory.
This dropout replaces the non-driveside dropout on your Divide rack frame and allows you to use a kid trailer hitch AND rack at the same time.

Can I use a child seat on the racks?

Due to the wide variety of child seat designs and our solid top deck design we do not recommend mounting a child seat on the Old Man Mountain racks.

And it has never been tested so there are no guarantees.

What I can use the 3 eyelets on the Elkhorn and Pizza Rack for?

Oh, you can use these 3 holes for a variety of things.

The Elkhorn and Pizza Rack have 3 eyelets on each of the side legs. They are for a purpose, so you can attach accessories.

- Use the Widefoot CageMount so you can switch between softbags and waterbottles depending on your needs.
- Use the Widefoot LiterCage so you can carry large Nalgene water bottles.
- Use them to attach softbags, or fork mounted bags.

What about bike lights?

Old Man Mountain offers two light mounts. Both mounts are designed to work seamlessly with Old Man Mountain racks.

Headlight Mount
The Headlight Mount is an evolution of others on the market with a longer barrel to fit larger lights. You can attach it to the extenders or the eyelets of the bike or bike fork.

Tail Light Mount
The Tail Light Mount fits clip-on lights and lights with 50mm mount spacing. You can attach it to the holes on the uppper deck on all our racks.

Is the Old Man Mountain Basket made for all OMM racks?

Yes. The Old Man Mountain Basket is made for Old Man Mountain racks.
It bolts directly to OMM Divide, Divide Fat, Elkhorn, and Pizza Rack for a reliable and rattle free connection.

BUT.....the Basket does not match the Divide USA which has a bigger deck and hole pattern.

Is the Ponderosa Pannier waterproof?

Yes. Fully welded and waterproof construction.

Is Juniper Trunk sold as a pair?

No. Juniper Trunk is sold as a single bag. It is meant for placing on top of the racks, not hanging on the sides.
The Ponderosa Panniers are sold as a pair.

Installation of racks

Is there a manual for how to install?

Yes. And if you prefer visual over print, on our YuoYube channel there are several videos of how to mount the racks.
(The manual is in English, but also in French, German and Spanish)
Instructions for our racks >>

Or take a look at the videos:
How to install our racks >>

Which rack should I install and what is a Fit Kit?

There is actually only 1 Divide or Elkhorn rack. But there are various installation kits, or Fit Kits.

Why?

As we try to explain on the product page, our axle substitutes the original axle of your bike. This is why it is so important that our axle has the same thread pitch as the original axle.

The beauty of the Fit Kit design of the Old Man Mountain racks is their modularity. Your OMM rack frame will fit your bike, your next bike, and probably your next bike. If your next bike has a different thread axle you just need to order a new Fit Kit and not the complete rack. Each Fit Kit contains a thru axle to replace your original thru axle and provide a strong foundation to attach your OMM rack. Also included are all the components to secure the rack to the frame or fork and prevent it from rotating around the axle.

Will it work if I have rear suspension?

Yes. No problem. That's the reason we started production of Old Man Mountain back in 1996.

Any other tips?

Okay, a few pointers....

  • Our pucks, zipties and seatpost clamp are great for the upper attachment. But if your frame or fork has upper eyelet mounts to attach the extenders, then by all means use them if you prefer.
  • However, we prefer to mount OMM racks to thru axles rather than lower fender or rack eyelets. Our axles and Fit Kits interlock to provide physical support for the rack, mounted on our 10mm, stainless steel axle ends. A lower, 5mm eyelet bolt is weak because it is in what engineers call "Sheer" and does not take full advantage of our design.
  • Sometimes the width of our racks and the mounting points on your particular frame will require bending the Extenders to get the best fit. The aluminium extenders can be bent. Don't hesitate to do this.

Saddlebags

How do I attach the Carradice Saddlebags?

Most Carradice saddlebags attach using three leather straps—two for the saddle loops and one for the seat post. For larger bags, you can use a Bagman support rack to keep them stable and prevent sagging.

What is the best way to clean my Carradige bag?

For saddlebags made of Cotton Duck, we recommend spot cleaning your bag with warm water and a sponge. Avoid using detergents as they can strip the wax coating.

Where are Carradice bags made?

All Carradice bags are handmade in Nelson, Lancashire, UK, using traditional techniques and high-quality materials. Since 1932.

Can I use the saddlebags with a carbon frame/seatpost?

Yes but we recommend you wrap the contact points with protective tape.

Which saddlebag should I choose?

Depends on how much stuff you need to bring on your ride.
Below a comparison of Carradice Saddlebags. Bags in bold red are the models we usually have in stock. The other bags can occasionally be in stock, so if you are interested and they don't appear in the shop, send us an email.)

Which Bagman rack do I need for my Saddlebag?

If your saddle already has bag loops then the Bagman standard is sufficient. The Sport will accommodate smaller bags like the Barley, Lowsaddle, Cambrian, and Audax. The Expedition will accommodate the larger saddlebags like the Camper, Nelson, Super C and Odyssey.

If your saddle does not have bag loops then the best Bagman support is the QR version. With this Bagman the saddlebag attaches to the Bagman clamp and not the saddle.

Can I use the saddlebags with a carbon frame/seatpost?

Yes but we recommend you wrap the contact points with protective tape

Cargo Mounts

Where are the Widefoot cargo cages made?

All of the hardware is made in the United States, most of it in Colorado.

Can I use the Widefoot on the Old Man Mountai Racks?

Absolutely!

We started importing Widefoot because we think they are a perfect fit for the 3-pack mount on the Elkhorn.

You can also use the Widefoot cargo mounts with the Axle Pack and you can attach them to the side legs of the Pizza Rack as well.

Just select the size of Widefoot Cargo Cage you need: Classic, Mega or Mini.

Does Wideffot supply screws with the cargo cages?

No, at the moment the cargo cages are sold as is, without mounting hardware.

Can I buy FLiP Cages without the Hemlock bag?

Yes. The FLiP Cages are sold separately as well.

The FLiP Cages is both a cage for attaching bags and a stand alone cargo cage.

FLiP Cages are versatile cargo cages. For example, you can use the included removable cargo feet if you want to carry bottles.

Are all bags compatible with the FLiP Cages?

No.

At the moment Old Man Mountain offers the Hemlock bags.

However, Old Man Mountain sells the FLiP Cage system to other bag manufacturers. So soon there might be more bag options on the market. Most other bagmakers using FLiP Cages are currently located in the US, so in Europe we might have to wait a bit for other options to appear on the market.
